My Brother Can’t Possibly Be a Fallen Magical Girl Chapter 2 Part 1
Chapter 2: Nursing Home (Page 1)
"So tired..."
As he walked out of the school gates, Bai Yuze muttered about being exhausted, but instead of heading straight home, he boarded a bus and made his way to the Akihabara Nursing Home, located across half of Ye Qiu City.
He was going to volunteer at the nursing home.
Most of the residents at the nursing home were victims of the third wave of the Black Tide Disaster. Their families, children, and friends had all perished in that catastrophe.
As soon as he entered the nursing home, the elderly residents turned their eyes toward him, their wrinkled faces lighting up with faint smiles.
It seemed that the arrival of a young person had lifted their spirits.
"Xiao Ze is here! What funny stories about your mischievous students do you have for us today?"
"Thank you for your hard work, Xiao Ze. You come here every day to help us old folks with this and that."
Bai Yuze greeted the elderly residents warmly and made his way into the courtyard.
"Brother Ze, you’re here."
In the courtyard stood a burly young man.
He was about 1.8 meters tall, wearing a light blue shirt and black shorts—a simple and casual outfit. Despite his relaxed appearance, he worked efficiently, quickly folding the bedsheets that had been drying in the courtyard. Hearing footsteps, he turned and saw Bai Yuze entering. A smile spread across his face as he greeted him.
This young man’s name was Peng Liang, and he was around twenty years old.
The two had met by chance. When Peng Liang was eighteen, both his parents and younger brother had died in the Black Tide. Left alone, he had been on the verge of jumping off a bridge to end his life when Bai Yuze, who had just entered society at the time, found him and saved him. Bai Yuze introduced him to the Akihabara Nursing Home, and over time, influenced by Bai Yuze, Peng Liang also became a volunteer there.
Having lost his family, Peng Liang treated the elderly residents as if they were his own relatives, and the elderly, in turn, naturally saw him as one of their own.
Most of these elderly residents had no one to rely on and nothing to hold onto. Even though the government had introduced numerous welfare policies, the smiles they once wore would never return.
They were like kites drifting in the sky, their strings already severed.
Bai Yuze and Peng Liang’s job was to try and tether these kites, helping them find new anchors so they could live out their days with some joy.
Not long after Peng Liang arrived, he received a recruitment notice from the Special Operations Department. Filled with hatred for the calamity beasts, he signed up without hesitation.
There, he seemed to rediscover a reason to live. Shortly after starting work, he began to recover from his trauma.
He seemed to be doing quite well, often boasting about how amazing he was, with a promotion trajectory that suggested he might become a team leader in a year and a department head in two.
In the courtyard, Bai Yuze and Peng Liang bustled about, busy with their tasks.
The elderly residents gathered together, chatting and sighing with emotion.
"Xiao Ze is handsome, caring, and a teacher at that. I wonder which lucky girl will end up with him. It’s a shame my granddaughter was killed by those damned calamity beasts, otherwise..."
"Ah, it’s all in the past now."
"Bai Yuze and Peng Liang are such good kids. Xiao Bai is a teacher at Qiu Yuan No. 1 High School. Before, Qiu Yuan High School wasn’t anything special, but after the Black Tide Crisis, schools from other cities merged their resources with No. 1 High, and now it’s the best school in the Ye Qiu City area..."
"Xiao Peng is also doing well. I heard he’s with the Special Operations Department..."
"The benefits are good, but he’s rarely home, and it’s a dangerous job. Still, overall, both of them are great young men, and they’re both in stable, government positions!"
At this point, one of the elderly residents suddenly chimed in, speaking softly.
"You know, instead of letting someone else benefit, why not let one of our own? What do you think about my daughter, Xiao Huan?"
"Don’t even think about it. Your daughter hasn’t visited you once since she graduated from high school, went to university, and moved abroad. She doesn’t even care about her own mother. Don’t let her ruin such a fine young man."
"She hasn’t visited me these years, but she sends money every month, and it’s not a small amount. She’s still filial."
The white-haired elderly woman standing under the tree, leisurely fanning herself, wasn’t ready to give up. But she also understood that if she wanted Bai Yuze to meet her daughter, she would need the approval of her peers.
"No, absolutely not. What do we old folks lack? Money? No, we lack care and companionship. What if your daughter corrupts them? Who will take care of us lonely old folks then?"
